Desandi Dihanda Gamage, a student of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, excelled in the FIDE World Amateur Open Chess Championship 2023, securing the second position in the under-2000 women category.
The event took place in Muscat, Oman, from November 2nd to 10th, featuring 86 participants representing 56 countries. Desandi’s outstanding achievement brought honour to her motherland and marked a noteworthy milestone six years after 2017.
To commemorate her success, a celebratory event was held at her school on December 6th, 2023, graced by the presence of the school’s principal.
